Descrizione English (Inglese)
In 1856 Zealand's first "højskole" - literally "high school", a place for the education and betterment of adults - was founded by famous priest and poet Niels Frederik Severin Grundtvig, for money he received at his 70th birthday in 1853. The school opened outside the city, in what is now the borderline between the city districts of Nørrebro and Østerbro, and it was named after Grundtvig's second wife, Marie Toft: Marielyst ("Marie's Joy"). The first principal was candidatus theologiæ Carl Joachim Brandt, who also succeeded Grundtvig as parish priest at Vartov after his death.
In 1890 the school was moved to Lyngby north of Copenhagen, and it relocated again in 1937 to the vicinity of Hillerød in Northern Zealand where it was joined with Frederiksborg Højskole, which was founded in 1895 by Holger Begtrup, who published some of Grundtvig's works post-mortem. The school is no longer known as Marielyst but rather Frederiksborg or Grundtvigs Højskole.
In 1953 Marielyst was demolished. On the site today is a small monument and a transformer station.

TNLNSL, Thomas
