Description    Deutsch (German)

In the near of Unternogg, already only after 15 km river length according to their origin, the river Ammer carved itself deeply in the rock and formed a canyon over thousands of years. Of a length of 600 m, a width of 300 m and a depth of 80 m a gorge arose in which the profile of the Oligocene is revealed.

The gorge arose as a meander that found a meander core - the "Scheibum (= bavarian slang for "itself twisting, no exit") arose and the Ammer buried itself until a narrow breakthrough arose.

During the Oligocene in front of 33.9 to 23.03 million years the arching of the alps arose. In the following young moraine before about 115,000 years the Ammer dug itself through the Ammer-Loisach-hill-country. Today one can easily recognize in the gorge the shift consequences (Geotype 2.1 and 1.1) these ages'.

Geologically the Scheibum consists of marl shifts in a matched way with brick.

A marl is a sedimentary rock, that consists of clay and lime and arises in bog and swamp fields. According to the relation of clay to lime one speaks of highly concentrated lime above marl to highly concentrated clay. There are the best known marl occurrences, however, in the Netherlands, not in the alps.

To this sedimentary rock still the element - shifts, formed from sandstone, come at the Scheibum.

Put together petrographically the Scheibum consists of marlstone and sandstone. During the visit of the Scheibum many places prove this in great variety: As natural limestone, as loam, quartz (here in the colors knows and gray) and as slates (typical wrinkle education).

After the Scheibum the Ammer flows to Rottenbuch and Peissenberg through a canyon that can be crossed at the "Echelsbacher bridge" with a nice overlook.

Around this Earthcache two conditions must be met to log this EarthCache:
- In what area are you located in (look at the board at the bridge and please be specific about the geologic setting)?
- Make a photo of you at the listed above coordinates (cf. photo below)

We wish you a beautiful time at this distinctly beautiful and quiet place at the end of the river Ammer-valley.
